The Name of Champagne

Champagne is actually the name of a region before it becomes the admirable sparkling wine. The name Champagne was designated by Romans in the Latin word campania which referred to the similarities between the rolling hills of the province and Campania in Italy. It sits on the north-east of France, concealed in river valleys and trade routes. Thanks to its steep slopes and cool climate, the sparkling wines produced in this region are second to none. As a result, under the law of many countries, the term “Champagne” is exclusively reserved for the sparkling wines produced in this very region. Otherwise, the counterparts could only be referred as sparkling wines, at best.
