Wine Glasses Matter

Wine glasses play a crucial role in wine tasting, significantly influencing the perception of a wine's aroma, flavour, and overall experience.

First, it enhances Aroma (Nose of the Wine). The shape of the glass directs aromas toward your nose. A tapered rim concentrates volatile compounds, making it easier to detect subtle notes (e.g., floral, fruity, or oaky scents). Larger bowls allow wine to breathe, releasing more complex aromas (especially important for red wines).

Second, it controls wine’s oxygen exposure. Wider bowls (common in red wine glasses) increase oxidation, softening tannins and unlocking deeper flavours. Narrower glasses (for whites & sparkling wines) minimize oxidation, preserving freshness and acidity.

Third, it directs wine to the right part of the palate. The shape of the rim guides wine flow to specific taste zones on the tongue. Red wine glasses direct wine to the back of the mouth, emphasizing body and tannins while white wine glasses guide wine to the tip and sides, highlighting acidity and fruitiness.

In short, wine glass types do matter. Common ones are Bordeaux glass, Burgundy glass, white wine glass, sparkling flute/tulip and universal glass. Check out Zalto, the hand-crafted wine glasses tailored to different wines made in Austria. Alternatively, Gabriel-Glas produces one and only one universal wine glass which is designed to drink every kind of wines (and save your space)!
