Sine Qua Non

The Emblem of US Cult Wines

Sine Qua Non is one of the most cultish, sought-after, and enigmatic wineries in Ventura County, California, known for its avant-garde approach, tiny production, and uncompromising quality. Founded by Manfred Krankl (a former sommelier and restaurateur), SQN has achieved near-mythical status among collectors.

Every vintage has a new name, label, and blend—each bottle is a standalone work of art. And Krankl designs each label himself (often with surreal, provocative imagery). "Nothing without which (it) cannot be" – Each wine is a unique, small-lot creation with no two bottlings exactly alike. With no surprise, the production is extremely limited (often just a few hundred cases per wine), sold via mailing list with years-long waiting lists.

SQN is inspired by Rhône varietals, and hence produce two flagship red wines: Syrah-based and Grenache-based. The Syrah is often dense, opulent, yet balanced, with layers of dark fruit, smoked meat, violets, and exotic spices, while the Grenache is lush, perfumed, and silky, with raspberry, garrigue, and incense notes. The white is equally impressive, often a blend of Roussanne, Viognier and Chardonnay - honey apricot, orange blossom and wet stone.
