Crystallum Peter Max Pinot Noir 2024 showcases world-class South African wines from brothers Peter-Allan and Andrew Finlayson's acclaimed Hemel-en-Aarde estate. Named after their pioneering father Peter and winemaker Peter-Allan (Tim Atkin MW's 2021 South African Winemaker of the Year), this multi-vineyard blend sources grapes from seven parcels across Hemel-en-Aarde, Shaw's Mountain, and Kaaimansgat, grown on clay-shale and limestone soils. Hand-harvested with 50-60% whole-bunch wild fermentation, the wine ages 9 months in French oak (10% new) and is bottled unfiltered at 13.5-13.67% alcohol. Rated 16.5/20 by Jancis Robinson, production reaches 35,000 bottles.
Burgundian Grace Meets Southern Hemisphere
The 2024 vintage reveals vibrant ruby hues with red cherry, wild strawberry, damson, rhubarb, earthy clove, cocoa nibs, and smoky charcuterie notes. Fresh and precise, the palate delivers red plum, tart cherry, cranberry, dark chocolate, and maraschino cherry with pine-resin tannins balanced by crisp acidity. Grippy tannins provide structure and a long, dry finish with remarkable aging potential.
