Wine Review - August Edition

This August, we embarked on an exciting exploration of four distinct wines, ranging from the crisp notes of Pinot Grigio to the bold flavours of Syrah. One standout in our tasting adventures is the exquisite Chêne Bleu. Named after the iconic blue oak tree that graces the estate, Chêne Bleu wines are crafted at the SCEA Domaine de La Verrière, nestled in the picturesque Vaucluse region of Provence.

The estate, an isolated medieval priory in Crestet, has undergone a decade-long transformation, restoring its idyllic mountain vineyards to meet the highest international standards. Each wine is a testament to the dedication involved in its creation—hand-picked, made, and matured right on the estate.

Situated in a privileged location, the Domaine sits atop a secluded mountain saddle above the charming village of Crestet, just northeast of Avignon. With the stunning Dentelles de Montmirail mountains as a backdrop and the majestic Mont Ventoux looming nearby, this region is not just beautiful; it’s perfect for producing exceptional wines.

Chêne Bleu Heloise 2007 $900 - France, Rhône

This beautifully aged wine impresses with its rich, concentrated character and deep garnet colour. The nose is a delightful mix of red fruit, clove, and tobacco, along with hints of hazelnut cream, dried fig, and cacao. On the palate, it feels full-bodied and smooth, with velvety tannins that are perfectly integrated. Flavours of raspberry preserve, cassis syrup, and black plum come through, mingling with subtle notes of smoke and dark florals. The finish is long and elegant, leaving a lovely aftertaste of dark chocolate and red vine liquorice. An extremely enjoyable experience!

Antica Terra Coriolis Syrah 2019 $480 - USA, Willamette Valley

At five years' post-vintage, this Syrah showcases a youthful opaque crimson hue. The aromatic profile features black cherries, blueberries, liquorice, savory herbs, cracked pepper, and lavender. Full-bodied with low-to-medium acidity and an alcohol level of 14.2%, it offers flavours that align closely with the nose. The mid-palate is robust, although the oak influence has yet to fully integrate, resulting in slightly astringent tannins. The finish was shorter than expected, but marked by wood and grip. A cool-climate Syrah, characterized by red fruit, pepper, and leather, with prominent notes of black cherry and liquorice.

Casalforte Pinot Nero Veneto IGT 2021 $120 - Italy, Veneto

A medium purple wine with a ruby-red hue tending toward light garnet. The aroma features notes of blackberry, juniper, and a hint of smoke. On the palate, it offers flavours of dark fruit, cherry, vanilla, and oak, with a pleasant and persistent finish. Smooth and enjoyable. A value for money.

Barons de Rothschild Lafite Malbec 2017 $160 - Argentina, Uco Valley

Black cherry red colour with violet hues. The nose bursts with red fruit aromas, notably black cherry and blackberry, alongside hints of wood, tobacco, and dark chocolate. On the palate, it offers a smooth blend of blackberry, blackcurrant, wood, tobacco, and dark chocolate, finishing dry. Easy to enjoy without airing but it went downhill quite rapidly. This wine is a great choice for casual sipping and offers excellent value.
