Bodegas Avancia
Bodegas Avancia is nestled in the slate-dominant mountainsides of Valdeorras, overlooking the Sil River. The name derives from the area's Roman history of extensive gold mining (Val-de-Oras translates to Valley-of-Gold in Latin). Valdeorras boasts ideal terroir for Spain's key indigenous grapes—Godello and Mencía.
Jorge Ordóñez pioneered Godello in the United States and fulfilled his dream of owning a Godello-focused project with Bodegas Avancia, renowned for producing Spain's finest Godello wines.
Robert Parker, Jr. praised Bodegas Avancia in 2016 as one of his favorite Spanish wineries, highlighting their 23-acre dry-farmed estate with organic viticulture. Avancia excels in Godello, celebrated for its Chardonnay-like texture with crisp mineral and floral aromatics, making it Spain's premier indigenous white grape producer.
Jorge also chose D.O. Valdeorras for Mencía, Galicia's primary red grape. Slate soils, high altitudes, old vines, and a warmer climate than other Galician regions combine to offer Valdeorras optimal conditions for growing Mencía.
