Founded by Miljenko “Mike” Grgich, a pioneer in the wine world, Grgich Hills Estate is a symbol of Napa Valley’s winemaking excellence. Mike’s journey to fame began at the historic 1976 Paris Tasting, where his 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay defeated France’s finest white wines, putting California wines on the global map.
A Historic Beginning
In 1977, Mike partnered with Austin Hills to establish Grgich Hills Cellar in Rutherford, Napa Valley. The winery quickly gained acclaim for its richly complex Chardonnays, including the 1977 vintage, which won the Great Chicago Showdown in 1980. Queen Elizabeth II is served the 1978 Grgich Hills Chardonnay at the home of Stanford University President Donald Kennedy. By 2007, the winery transitioned to Grgich Hills Estate, sourcing all grapes from its 366 acres of organic, estate-grown vineyards.
Commitment to Quality & Sustainability
Grgich Hills is dedicated to organic and regenerative farming, achieving Regenerative Organic Certification in 2023. Their portfolio includes iconic wines like the Paris Tasting Commemorative Chardonnay, Old Vine Zinfandel, and Yountville Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon.
A Family Legacy
In 2019, Mike’s daughter, Violet Grgich, became president, continuing the family’s tradition of excellence. In 2023, Mike celebrated his 100th birthday, marking a century of winemaking innovation and passion.
