The Pioneers of Marlborough Wines
Hunter's Wines, established in 1979 by Ernie and Jane Hunter, is a foundational estate in New Zealand's Marlborough region. As the oldest independent, continuously family-owned winery in Marlborough, Hunter's played a pivotal role in putting the region on the global wine map .
The winery's breakthrough came in 1986 when its Fumé Blanc won top honors at The Sunday Times Vintage Festival in the UK, a landmark moment for New Zealand wine . Following Ernie's sudden passing in 1987, Jane Hunter took the helm, demonstrating remarkable leadership. Under her guidance, the 1989 Sauvignon Blanc was named Decanter's Best Sauvignon in the World . Jane was later inducted into the New Zealand Wine Hall of Fame as the first woman to receive the honor and was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for her services to viticulture .
