Nestled in the heart of Wilyabrup, Pierro is one of Margaret River’s most revered wineries. Founded in 1980 by Mike Peterkin, a pioneering winemaker and GP, Pierro is known for its meticulous craftsmanship and unwavering commitment to quality. Despite its unassuming appearance, the winery has earned a stellar reputation for producing some of Australia’s finest wines.
A Legacy of Excellence
Mike Peterkin, one of Margaret River’s early winemaking doctors, brought his scientific precision and passion to Pierro. After studying oenology at Roseworthy, he transformed Cullen Wines with Australia’s first Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blend before focusing on his own project. Pierro’s first vintage, a 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon, set the stage for decades of exceptional winemaking.
Iconic Wines
Pierro’s Chardonnay is legendary—rich, buttery, and aged in 50% new oak, yet balanced by vibrant acidity.
The winery also excels with its Cabernet Sauvignon, using unique Houghton clones (The Western Australian Cabernet industry was originally founded on the Houghton clone selections, with many of Margaret River’s greatest Cabernet being made from Houghton clone, which has a unique Western Australian heritage) that enhance fruit complexity and regional character.
A Commitment to Quality
Mike’s attention to detail is unparalleled. From meticulous grape sorting to rigorous quality control, every step reflects his dedication to excellence. Pierro’s wines are crafted with precision, avoiding trends to stay true to their classic style.
A Quiet Pioneer
Unlike many of his peers, Mike has remained deeply involved in both winemaking and medicine, balancing his roles as a GP and winemaker. His perseverance and refusal to compromise have cemented Pierro’s place as a Margaret River icon.
