Europe's Largest Biodynamic Estate: Vegan Philosophy Meets Tuscan Terroir

Querciabella stands as one of Tuscany's most innovative estates, founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni and now led by his son Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni. The winery has risen to the pinnacle of Chianti Classico through pioneering vegan biodynamic viticulture across 106 hectares—the largest biodynamic vineyard extension in Europe—farming without any animal inputs since 2010.

In 2000, Sebastiano converted the entire estate to biodynamics, developing a unique plant-based approach with up to 27 plant species growing between vines, replacing traditional animal-based preparations with ceramic horns and botanical alternatives. This philosophy extends to winemaking: unfined, unfiltered wines fermented lot-by-lot in minimal new oak to showcase authentic terroir.

Critics acclaim Querciabella as one of Italy's finest producers. Their flagship Batàr white consistently earns 93-97 points, with Jancis Robinson comparing it to Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne, while Camartina represents benchmark Super Tuscan elegance.
