Restless River is a boutique winery nestled in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just 5km from the cold South Atlantic Ocean. Perched at an altitude of 1,200 feet, the vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate, ideal for crafting exceptional wines. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, once known as Attaquas Kloof, has a rich history dating back to 1760 when Wessel Wessels, the first European settler, established his home here. Legend has it that Wessels named the valley "Hemel-en-Aarde" (Heaven and Earth), a name that still resonates today.
In 2004, Craig and Anne Wessels, descendants of the original settler, purchased a portion of the historic farm, reviving the Wessels legacy in the valley. Craig, a passionate farmer and winemaker, oversees the vineyards and winemaking, while Anne manages the business operations. The estate is home to some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay vines in the region, planted in 1999, with Pinot Noir added in 2013.
Restless River combines tradition with innovation, producing wines that reflect the terroir and heritage of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Discover the story, passion, and exceptional wines of this remarkable estate. #RestlessRiver #HemelEnAardeValley #BoutiqueWinery #SouthAfricanWine
