Paul Hobbs

Pioneer of California's Single-Vineyard Movement

Paul Hobbs stands among California's most visionary winemakers, establishing his eponymous winery in 1991 after working alongside Robert Mondavi on the inaugural Opus One team. Raised on a family farm in upstate New York, Paul pioneered the vineyard-designate movement, becoming one of the first to champion single-vineyard wines that express terroir with Burgundian precision.

His philosophy centers on minimal intervention: indigenous yeast fermentation, gentle winemaking, and bottling unfined and unfiltered. Paul meticulously identifies exceptional vineyard sites across California, including his Katherine Lindsay Estate in Russian River Valley, crafting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon from premium appellations. Robert Parker famously noted, "Paul Hobbs is like a good truffle-hunting dog when it comes to finding great vineyards."
