Champagne Pierre Bertrand is located in the premier village of Cumières, the heart of the Champagne region. This area is known for its exceptional terroir, where the Montagne de Reims is famous for Pinot Noir, the Côte des Blancs for Chardonnay, and the Vallée de la Marne serves as the home of Pinot Meunier. Cumières is the intersection of these three regions, providing ideal conditions for all three grape varieties to thrive.
The Bertrand family originally supplied grapes to a cooperative. In 1944, family member Pierre Bertrand inherited a small vineyard from his grandmother and, driven by ambition, sought to create a Champagne that belonged to the family. After apprenticing with a local winemaker, he successfully launched his own label two years later, establishing the Pierre Bertrand estate. Over the next decade, the estate expanded by acquiring high-quality vineyards in Damery, Hautvillers, and Mardeuil.
In 1982, the estate was passed to Pierre's daughter, Thérèse. Upholding her father's commitment to quality, she focused solely on the Cœur de Cuvée (18 hl) for production. To assess the sugar and acidity levels in the grapes, the winery collaborated with a laboratory to analyze the base wines each year. This data allowed winemaker Mathilde to pre-select blends, drawing on the extensive experience of Thérèse and her husband, Bernard Deparnay-Bertrand, to finalize the ratios for different vintages. In 2010, Thérèse's son, Bertrand Deparnay, took full control of the estate, continuing the family's passion for crafting Champagne in Cumières.
In recent years, Pierre Bertrand has gained recognition, with its Premier Cru Brut receiving a remarkable 98 points in the Decanter Panel Tasting, the highest score among small grower Champagnes. Additionally, the estate's fortified wine earned a gold medal at the 2020 Ratafia Champenois Awards. It’s expected that Champagne Pierre Bertrand will soon be recognized among the top estates in Cumières.
