The First Family of Napa Chardonnay
Wente Vineyards is not only one of California's oldest continuously operated family-owned wineries but also a foundational pillar in the development of the state's wine industry. Founded in 1883, it is often called "the first family of Chardonnay" for its pivotal role in establishing and propagating the Chardonnay grape in California. The winery is renowned for its estate-grown wines, its commitment to sustainable farming, and its significant contributions to the Livermore Valley and Arroyo Seco AVAs.
Livermore Valley AVA: The historic home. Known for its gravelly soils (similar to Bordeaux), this warmer region is ideal for producing structured Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. It's also the source for their classic, reliable Chardonnay.
Arroyo Seco AVA, Monterey: This cooler, wind-swept region is defined by its rocky soils. It is perfect for growing Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Syrah with intense acidity and vibrant fruit flavors.
